Let’s Get Physical

Who doesn’t love a little Olivia Newton John? “Let’s get physical, physical I wanna get phhyyssical.” What a great song about working out. Not a double entendre or anything. Let’s put on our spandex, leg warms and headbands get through this post!

I’m really trying hard to work through my stash. About a month ago, I organized my stash (still organized btw) and came across a good amount of spandex I had left over. I have made workout capris in the past but I could really use some shorts and the amount of fabric I have is perfect.

I used my workout pants pattern. Mostly recently used in creating my Doctor Who pjs. Which I love and wear all the time. You can find the instructions by Cal Patch. There is some math involved in creating this pattern, but it’s so worth it! Custom made leggings peeps!

I used my serger on all the seams. It helps keep things stretchy. No one wants a butt cheek popping out because you broke all your stitches. Imagine that in yoga class. I have a feeling you would be asked not to return.

I turned up the hem about 1″ on each leg and used a double needle. I stretched the fabric a bit as I sewed so I wouldn’t pop any stitches. If I would have done a smaller hem, it have flipped and rolled up as I wore them. Talk about annoying!

How weird is it that the pattern on both of the legs match on the back? Totally did not mean for that! Then I got super excited so yay for unexpected fun things.

I love that the rise is higher in the back. No plumber butt when doing squats. Are you guys seeing a pattern here? I’m super worried about things showing suddenly; butt cheeks, butt crack…or I’m worried about my largest asset.  Get it? Ass-et.

You can see the shorts are not too short and not too long. I think the problem with my RTW shorts is that they’re too short. They cut into the middle of my thigh fat and roll up. My shorts sit below the fat so they stay where they belong. Totally don’t take that comment as me body-shaming myself. Nope, it’s just a fact I have squishy thighs guys.

Feeling strong with my snazzy new shorts! I’ve been wearing the crap out of them. So comfy! And who doesn’t love new workout wear? I think it helps motivate. Outta my way, time to go sweat.

Capri Activewear Part Deux

My first pair of capris are great and still going strong. I had a second piece of spandex fabric that I bought to make a second pair. I finally decided to sit down and make them. This fabric has a panel repeating design. I had to be careful about cutting this fabric. I didn’t want it to look like there were magical colors shooting out my crotch or behind.

I cut the one leg with the design going all the way down the leg. It’s almost like Mardi Gras except there’s no beads at this party. Well maybe beads of sweat! The other leg ended up being plain black, well for the most part.

Back
These pair ended up a bit longer than the first but fits just as well.

Continuation
The two legs look like a continuation of the other which was a happy accident.

Waistband
I made the waistband with the colorful panel piece with a wide elastic. I prefer the 3″ elastic for the waistband. I think it’s comfortable and it doesn’t try to twist around in the wash.

I figured this time around I would take photos in front of the treadmill. Seems like the appropriate place for activewear no? Of course this is prior to workout. You can tell because I’m still smiling!

Quick note:

I’m going to have to take a bit of time off from my blog. 😢 Hubby and I are picking and making a big move to Arizona. So all my time is going to be spent putting everything in boxes. I’m hoping to only be gone a few weeks but it depends on how long it takes to get settled in.

Capri Activewear

I don’t know about you but I’m sick of seeing plain materials being used in activewear for women. I want funky patterns and colors! I don’t think that’s a strange request.

One of the things I was adamant about picking up in NYC was some spandex. I’m making my own fun workout pants. And really, what’s more encouraging than pretty clothes to wear when working out? I picked mine up at either Spandex World or Spandex House. I feel really bad I can’t remember which it was.

I prefer to wear capris when I workout. The length has to be decently past my knee for maximum comfort. I have Reebok compression capris and my main complaint about those are they hit my natural waist and feel like they’re going to strangle my poor belly button. I’m constantly either folding them over or trying to keep the band at my hips by tugging. I’m sure if anyone watched me workout they would think I have ants in my pants.

I was spurred into making my own pants after seeing Lauren and the girls at Coletterie (who felt kitty kat inspired) versions. Too fabulous!! For mine, I made my own pattern from the instructions “How-Tuesday: Design and Sew Your Own Leggings” from Cal Patch that you can find here. I know it says leggings in the title but it’s a fine and dandy tutorial for workout pants. I mean both are stretchy and typically look like a second skin so we’re all good.

Making the pattern was the most time consuming part. It’s nothing exciting, but the main thing to draw your attention to is difference between the front and back rise. The high back ensures no plumber butt if you measure right. Now that I have it I can make more capris. *insert evil laugh here* Yes, there are plans for more capris in the future. I already have the fabric in my stash. 😆

WARNING: These are probably the most uncomfortable pictures for me to take. I’ve packed on the pounds after my g-ma passed away last year and taking them off isn’t going to well. I tried to use the most flattering shots and enough of them that you can see how bright, vibrate and easy to construct they are. Also, the picture quality sucks because I couldn’t take them on the new, awesome camera Hubby gave me but that’s a bit of a long story so onward!

The waist sits right where I’m most comfortable below my belly button! The top of the capris have a piece of fabric folded over a piece of wide elastic then it’s stitched to the legs.

Everything on these we’re done with my serger except for a zig zag stitch I put at the very bottom of the pants. Is it weird I’m happy they don’t give me camel toe? 😏 FYI, that’s Frankie butt in the picture.

Me trying to amuse Hubby. The capris have an inseam on the legs, the crotch seam and then the one around the waistband. I stitched the bottom of the legs too for a cleaner look but I really think you could do without it.

Quick and easy project to end the year on. I can’t wait to make another pair!
